Writing an academic paper is more difficult for international students because the diverse educational background. And writing a critical academic paper is one of the most important things of getting a good grade. No matter what discipline, the basic step of writing is to search for related articles from famous journals to demonstrate the research. As an international graduate student of Management, I should analyze plenty of articles from well-known journals related to my field. In this article, I will concentrate on one article. The aim of this article is to analyze the structure of the article, existing research presented, Harris’ Rhetorical Concepts of the article, the three moves, the graphs presented and the citation style. The title of the article I will talk about is “Language as a lightning rod: Power contests, emotion regulation, and subgroup dynamics in global teams” written by Catherine Durnell Cramton, Pamela J Hinds and Tsedal B Neeley, and published in the Journal of International Business Studies in June 2014. I write this paper to analyze some characteristic factors of an article in my discipline Management and to learn writing an academic paper more critically in this field.
Although the article does not have the same headings, the article follows IMRD pattern, including introduction, methods, results and discussion. The authors illustrated an introduction about the topic and structure of the article. In the introduction the authors clarify the hypotheses, essential findings with previous research. Then, the problem is involved in the method part. Finally, the article ended with discussion and findings which is like results. It’ visible that this paper showed the broad ideas first, and then talked about the narrow ideas. The clear structure of the article is helpful for readers to understand the article legibly. The introduction visibly showed the three moves Cramton, Hinds and Neeley (2014) presented in this article. First, move 1b showed the literature review of the topic researched. As authors said “Multinationals are increasingly mandating English as the lingua franca, or common language, to facilitate collaboration across national and linguistic boundaries (Bono & Vey, 2005; Feely & Harzing, 2003). Moreover, move 2 is highlights the gap in previous research, like the authors stated the gap is how to estimate dynamics, potential fissures and activation. Additionally, move 3a showed the purpose of the article, as the authors indicated the goal is to use language asymmetries to distinguish the diverse levels of language competence. And move 3c provided the structure and hypotheses of the article. This is seen when authors mentioned “Our theoretical contribution extends……subgrouping behavior” (p. 537). While following Harris’ Rhetorical Concepts, the study has been analyzed clearly. As English has been used more commonly for increasing national cooperation and linguistic regions. The purpose of the study is to illustrate and spread the theory about language and subgroup dynamics, to enhance the emotion-regulation processes by language-related choices and reaction. The authors interviewed 96 globally distributed members of six software development teams from Germany, India and the United States. There is no obvious driving question in this study. Most informants were engineers who could consider as a limitation of this study. Besides, the authors highlighted many researchers in their study. In particular, they are motivated by Bono & Vey (2005), Feely & Harzing (2003), who found that the importance of the language as a communication tool between countries. This study is relevant to managers and employees because this study remains managers to manage the team by language and dynamics control. The article involves some graphs and figures. For example, “Table 1: Summary of task descriptions and data collected by team” (p. 539), illustrated the information of interviewers, including name, locations, numbers, observation days and description. It’s obvious that readers can clearly see data about the experiment from this chart. It helps reader to understand information easily through vision. The American Psychology Association (APA) style is used in my field Management most. Using the same citation style is beneficial for writers to standard format, and is more efficient for audience to read and search the articles. The article directly quoted and paraphrased several times. For example, “We found that……resources” (Jehn & Bezrukova, 2010; Magee & Galinsky, 2008). It offers the problem teams faced. It’s helpful for authors presenting their ideas. The article is a typical example of academic writing in Management. I learned the structure of the academic paper and the citation style of my discipline after analyzing this article. To sum up, the process of analysis is beneficial not only for my writing skill, but also for reading skill. It makes me understand the main information of academic articles easily.
